Community Safety Initiative (CSI)
Support from the Department of Justice led to CHWC’s Community Safety Initiative (CSI) program. CHWC works closely with neighborhood residents and community police to address crime issues in the neighborhoods and formulate community wide plans to increase safety and security.
In addition, CHWC offers an after-school arts program for at-risk students at no charge. Information received from the KCK Police Department indicates that graffiti and gang related crime often occur after early dismissal or directly after school. The CSI Youth Program provides students with a positive alternative and fosters an interest in the arts. The program is a partnership with the USD 500 and Kansas City Young Audiences. The pilot program was launched at Central Middle School in the fall of 2006. During the 2007-2008 school year, CHWC offered this program at McKinley Elementary and West Middle School.
